National Park "Brijuni"
Brijuni Islands is an extraordinary combination of natural and cultural heritage. The mild climate and favorable geographical conditions, deep bays and well defended high altitude locations, ensured the continuity of human activities on the island from prehistory to recent times. The relatively small islands, covering an area slightly larger than 7 km2, have about a hundred of sites and buildings of archaeological, historical and cultural value. From ancient Roman villas, palaces of the Illyrian, Byzantine fortresses, a medieval church to the luxurious presidential residence, which was visited by the most powerful politicians and the most famous stars of the 20th century.
A mild Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant and healing place. Here there are almost 700 species of plants and 250 species of birds. Brijuni consists of 14 islands of which the largest is Veliki Brijuni.
The usual half-day introduction to Brijuni is conducted on a tourist train through the different natural beauties, through the safari park, the Byzantine castrum, the Roman residential villa in the Verige Bay and many other interesting sights. Along the harbor, there are the hotels "Istra", "Neptune" and "Carmen" and the church of St German from the 15th century in which there is an exhibition of Istrian frescoes and glagolitic monuments. Nearby is the natural, archaeological museum and the exhibition of "Tito on Brijuni".
